Italian Neorealism

In keeping up with my fetish-o-the-day of Italy, I decided this week's film would be Bicycle Thief.  It is a part of the Italian Neorealism movement of world cinema.  The first big movie of this movement was Rome, Open City.

So what makes this style unique?  Well, Italy was in shambles in every way after WWII.  Once filmmaking picked up again, the filmmakers used non-actors to be actors, various types of film they could pull together, and shot on location (that's when we see all the destroyed buildings).  There are many other things that are attached to this movement too.  The films are kinda depressing, but I think they are beautiful.

All this being said, go watch some Italian Neorealism :)

This really is a beautiful and complex, self-realizing film.
